Demystifying CTWA Attribution
Click-to-WhatsApp ads are highly converting, but notoriously hard to track. Learn how to connect ad clicks to WhatsApp revenue and scale your winning campaigns.
The "Ghost Click" Problem
When users click a CTWA ad, they enter WhatsApp. But if they don't send a message, Meta tracks the click, but you get no lead. Learn how to optimise for "conversations started" instead of link clicks.
The 72-Hour Free Window
Meta grants a free 72-hour messaging window for any conversation initiated from a CTWA ad. Understand how this affects your blended ROAS calculations.
Full Funnel Tracking
By integrating Frosty with your CRM, you can pass UTM parameters and conversion data back to the Meta Conversions API, training the algorithm to find actual buyers.
What happens after the click
A Click-to-WhatsApp ad does not open your website. It opens a WhatsApp chat with your business number. Attribution has to follow that path, not a landing-page pixel.
- 01
They tap the ad
Meta records a click. This is not a lead yet. Many people close WhatsApp before sending a word.
- 02
A chat opens
The thread is pre-filled with your greeting. A conversation starts only when they send a message.
- 03
The 24-hour window
That first message opens a service window. Replies inside it do not need a new marketing template.
- 04
A sale (or silence)
The chat becomes a quote, a booking, or goes cold. Ads Manager cannot see this unless you send the outcome back.
Why Ads Manager under-reports WhatsApp
Meta can see the click. It cannot see the rupee that landed in your account three days later inside WhatsApp. If you optimise the ad for link clicks, the algorithm buys more tap-and-leave traffic.
| What you see | What it actually means | What to use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Link clicks | Someone opened WhatsApp. They may never have typed. | Conversations started |
| CPC | Cost of a tap, including ghosts. | Cost per conversation (and per qualified chat) |
| Landing-page view | Does not exist on CTWA. There is no page. | First-message + qualification events |
| Purchase in Ads Manager | Empty unless you fire a conversion back. | CRM / Frosty sale → Meta Conversions API |
How the loop is supposed to close
Capture the click identity
CTWA can carry a click identifier into the first WhatsApp message. If your stack drops it, every later sale looks organic.
Keep UTMs on the contact
Campaign, ad set, and ad name belong on the lead record — not only in Ads Manager. Otherwise you cannot say which creative produced the meeting.
Send conversions back
When the chat becomes a qualified lead or a paid deal, fire that event to Meta’s Conversions API. The algorithm then buys people who talk and buy, not people who tap.
Write the ad so the click becomes a chat
Ghost clicks are often a copy problem. The person expected a website, a catalogue, or a phone call — then WhatsApp opened and they left.
Say WhatsApp in the first line
“Chat with us on WhatsApp for today’s price” beats “Learn more.” If the destination surprises them, they bounce before typing.
Pre-fill a useful first message
The icebreaker should be something they want to send — “I want the 2BHK brochure” — not a blank cursor. That is the difference between a click and a conversation.
Put the offer in the greeting
Your business greeting is the landing page. Price range, city, or next slot belongs there. A second website hop is what CTWA exists to skip.
The sale often lands days after the click
A sofa, a clinic slot, or a B2B quote is rarely paid in the same hour as the ad tap. Ads Manager’s default click window will look “empty” unless you keep the click id on the contact and fire the purchase when cash actually moves.
- →Judge week-one campaigns on conversations started and qualified chats — not purchase ROAS.
- →When the deal closes, send the same click identity back through the Conversions API so Meta can credit the ad.
- →Do not start a second CTWA campaign and call the first a failure because invoices land on a 7- or 14-day cycle.
- →If two ads touched the same person, the last click still wins in Ads Manager unless you pass a better event.
The free entry window (and why ROAS looks “too good”)
Meta treats a conversation that starts from a CTWA ad as a free entry for 72 hours. Follow-ups inside that window do not open a new paid marketing conversation. After it closes, the next business-initiated template is billed at the normal category rate.
If you ignore that fee on later sessions, blended ROAS is fiction. Include conversation cost — that is what the CTWA ROAS calculator is for.
Common questions
Should I optimise the ad for conversations or for purchases?+
Start with conversations started until you have enough closed deals to train purchase events. Purchases with a handful of pixels a week will starve the campaign. Once Frosty (or your CRM) is sending qualified-lead and purchase events, switch the optimisation.
Do I still need a landing page?+
Not for the click. The ad is the page. Put the offer in the first WhatsApp greeting and let the agent qualify. A second website hop is what CTWA is designed to remove.
Why is my cost per conversation much higher than CPC?+
Because only a fraction of clicks become a first message. That gap is the ghost-click rate. Improve the first-line copy in the ad and the pre-filled WhatsApp greeting so the tap is worth completing.
Can I run CTWA without the Business API?+
You can point an ad at a personal or Business-app number. You will not get a shared inbox, templates at scale, or a clean conversion loop. Attribution and team handling both need the API.
What is the click identifier I keep hearing about?+
When someone opens WhatsApp from an ad, Meta can attach a referral / click id to that first message. Your BSP has to persist it on the contact. If it is dropped, every later sale looks organic and the algorithm never learns who bought.
Should retargeting use another CTWA ad or a template?+
If they already messaged you and the 24-hour or 72-hour window is still open, reply in-thread. A new ad click to the same number is another ghost-click risk. After the window closes, an opted-in utility or marketing template is the honest re-open.
